One-On-One with Jason S. Greene Why Are You Here? I opened my little gym in Mobile, Alabama in 1981. Starting that day and every day since, I’ve been asking people, “Why aren’t you in the gym? Why don’t you workout?” Today it occured to me that a lot of people in the gym need to be asked the opposite. “Why are you in the gym? Why do you workout?” If you can’t give a short concise answer, you could be wasting valuable time and energy. You need to define what your goals are before you ever drive to the gym. Are you trying to lose weight? Gain weight? Gain muscle? Do you want more power or more endurance? I’m not saying you cannot work on different aspects of fitness at the same time, but a program to gain strength will look very different than one to gain endurance. A workout designed to help you get big is not going to make you super lean. You have to figure out your priorities. The best thing you can do is a periodization scheme. In other words, pick out what is most important to you right now and work on it for 4-12 weeks. Then take stock and figure out what you want to acheive next. If you don’t know what you are doing take time to do some research and read some books. If you need some more help, get a fitness coach, like me, to design your program. Just make sure they know what they are doing before you spend your money. Periodization is not a new concept, just one I thought needed to be brought up again. The good news is, if you are going to the gym, you are already miles ahead of 99% of the population. Good for you!
